oliver is our shih-poo | toypoodle shih tzu puppy one of eight puppies
77Oliver is One. The Story so Far
Oliver our very handsome Shihpoo puppy has just turned one year old and I would like to share with you the story of how he came to be part of our Home and Family.
Our beautiful little dog Primrose (she was a Maltese / shih-tzu / Bichon Frisé ) passed away in a matter of only 2 weeks. The cause was kidney failure. Due to our goal of relocating to another residence we did not want to carry out the usual practice of burying our pets in a pride of place in our garden.
We had her cremated and she now sits comfortably on our crystal cabinet, surrounded by her favorite toys.
We decided to wait a little while before we adopted another pet. It was just too soon.
Our Friends Enter the Story
Soon after we lost our Primrose we arranged to go on another holiday to a place near Lakes Entrance where friends of ours lived and was our usual holiday destination. This was going to be hard for us as it was our first holiday without our Primrose in many years.
Big mistake ^-^. These friends were the very people who had been grooming our little Primrose virtually all of her life!
We Were Moping
After a few days they could see that my husband and I were both moping around and generally not having a good time. We tried, we really did :)
Of course our friends had come to the conclusion that we were missing the companionship of not having a pet especially Primrose and they decided that we would not go home without a new puppy.
Our friends, using a bit of friendly persuasion, talked us into going around the local animal shelters to see if there was any dogs / puppies that caught our attention.
Backwards and forward we went "Uming" and "Aring" this went on for a few days but alas, although there were plenty of options, not one animal appealed enough to either of us to say:
"I want to take you home".
The Fateful Day
We returned to trying to enjoy our holiday but in about two days and with some persistence I must say, our friend came to us holding the local newspaper.
"Just by chance" she says " I was reading the local paper" she continued with a smile "and what did I find" with a wider smile, she continued without even waiting for a reply "There are two puppies advertised in the local paper, looking for a new home" "and they are not far from here to boot" "just down the road a piece" she added with a big smile!
So OK you guessed what happened next? With some toing and froing and some phone calls we arranged to go and look at these 8 week old puppies.
Not too Far Now
Hrmph! - "just down the road" she said, it only took three quarters of an hour to get there but we finally did, after a few wrong turns and another phone call for further directions.
We were greeted by the pups Human mother and the pups dogie mother as we got out of the car! We had to be vetted to make sure we were suitable to adopt their little boy, Right?
When we had passed the suitability test, we were introduced to these two little "balls of fluff" because that is exactly what they looked like. We could not see their legs, eyes or mouths and they just ran and ran around chasing each other and their mum.
Difficult Selection Time
We then came up against a problem, which one? could we take both? "No, one for now"! They were both black, both about the same size and both very friendly. When we looked at them a little more closely we discovered that one of the little black balls of fluff had a small white goatee shaped beard and a white spot on his chest. So he was our choice. Decision made we and he said goodbye to his two mums and jumped into the car and returned back to our Holiday home. Not before stopping at a Pet Shop and picking up all of the necessary and some unnecessary stuff for our new as yet unnamed puppy.
Naming our Puppy
Fortunately our friend was a dog groomer so as soon as we got back she grabbed the pup and gave him a good going over. It was at this point we got the inspiration for his name!
He had never been washed or groomed before so as you can imagine he was a handful wriggling and twisting trying to jump out of the bath the penny dropped!
Twist...... Oliver Twist....... from now on he will be known as (drum roll)
"Oliver"
First Friend
He became very attached to our friends Schnauzer who is an absolutely beautiful boy. Then we had to leave to come home, he traveled so well in the car he loved it.
We arrived home nobody at home knew that we had him, We kept that a secret.
Well they all fell in love with him, Our Grandchildren were so excited, even their Blue Heeler thought he was great, protected him and played with him in a very gentle way, he obviously knew he was just a baby.
Thanks to our Great Friends
We are ever so glad that our friends loved and cared enough for us to know exactly what we needed at this time, something we obviously couldn't see ourselves.
He is absolutely nothing like our beautiful Primrose, maybe it's a male thing, But he is well and truly entrenched into our hearts. Has his own personality and way of doing things. He is our little treasure. We absolutely love him to bits, even when he is naughty.

Happy Birthday Oliver you adorable dog.
What a fun read this is! Reminds me of getting our Finnegan two years ago, in attitude if not in actual process. I am so glad I stumbled about and found you. I believe Oliver is a lucky fellow to have the two of you loving him up!
Oliversmum, thanks so much for the memories of Oliver's birthday. That Roast Lamb sure was delicious :-)
In retrospect it was a great time, that little adventure we had to find Oliver.
Just looking through the Slide show reminds me of how cute a little puppy he was, how he has grown into a naughty boy and how we found out he was a shihpoo!
The Shihtzu blood will do that! Rottenest little dog known to man! Very smart and loving though, usually with a good sense of humour. We have had 2 and still have one.
As for the small black poodle content. I reckon these guys are just great too. A brilliant body and mind. :) Smart, cheeky, acrobatic and more. What a great mix!
Happy birthday you cheeky little fella!
Oh!Oliver looks very lovable. When my dog Maxima died just recently, I would not want to have another pet again. I am a very emotional person that when she was sick, there never was a day that I did not cry even until now as I write this comment. I don't want to go through it again, I mean the grief and the pain..
Oliver! He is so darn cute! Love the photos. I have a shih tzu who is going to be 10. Brought him home when only 12 weeks old. I am mad about dogs - they are the absolute best. Thank you for sharing Oliver.
I guess none of us can compete with animals, I loved this charming"tail" and yes I can spell, give the little one a big hug from me, wish I were there to do it myself.
Have fun.
Nice to know the story of Oliver AND your avatar. He is so cute!!! Sounds like a great combination...a Shih-poo. Bet he keeps you smiling! :-)
Thanks for another lovely hub. He's a very lucky boy
